About UPVC Pipe Fittings as per IS 13593:1992

When it comes to agricultural pump systems, the market demands standard quality and BIS-certified products for long-term reliability and efficiency. The Standard Quality Mark (ISI Mark) is applied to each product, and only manufacturers holding a valid BIS license are permitted to use the ISI Mark.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has formulated IS 13593:1992 specifically to regulate the manufacture and performance of UPVC (Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride) pipe fittings used in the suction and delivery lines of agricultural pumps.

Specifications outlined in IS 13593:1992 are legally enforceable, and manufacturers must comply to qualify for BIS certification and ISI mark.

Types of UPVC Fittings Covered

IS 13593:1992 covers a wide range of fittings, including:

Couplers

Reducer Couplers

Male Threaded Pieces (MTP)

Reducer Threaded Pieces

Female Threaded Pieces (FTP)

End Pieces (Tail Pieces)

End Piece Rings

Material and Manufacturing Requirements

UPVC Fittings must be made from UPVC pipes that comply with IS 12231:1987.

Threaded parts must be made with pipes that have thicker walls for added strength.

Internal and External surfaces must be smooth, clean, free from cracks, crazing, pinholes, inclusions, or any other defects

Dimensional and Design Standard

The fitting shall also be classified by working pressure, rated at 27°C as follows:

Performance and Quality Testing

The fitting shall be subjected to the following test:

Marking, Certification, and Compliance

Every fitting must be properly marked or embossed with the manufacturer’s name/ID, pressure class, and fitting size

.Only manufacturers with a valid BIS license can use the ISI Mark. Such licenses are granted based on the successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
